Somalia: 13-year-old inventor gains international celebrity

Fame has suddenly hit a 13-year-old boy in the northern Somali town, Buhodle. Guled Adan Abdi is trending on twitter (#gacanqaboguled) after teaching himself to create toys from waste and then managind to educate himself on how to motorize them after studying cars, the BBC reported.

Guled spoke with the news service saying; “I started making toys when I was younger.

“I used to play with them without any motor. But later I said to myself: ‘Why don’t you make them into a moving machine?’

“So I looked at the cars in the town and invented my toys with the same design.”

Dalsan Radio wrote that Somalis are calling on the government and others to support the 13-year-old in his dream of becoming a producer of cars in the country.

Thus far Guled has build four electronic toys including a plane, truck and fan with a light, the BBC reported.

Even though Guled has not been able to attend school on a regular basis he has managed to educate himself inventing fascinating toys. His father disappeared in 2002 and is presumed to be dead. The family struggles at times and sometimes have stay with their relatives preventing Guled from attending school due to the remoteness of the area.

However, the BBC reported that the family has been in Buhodle for a year now enabling Guled to go to school and continue with his creations.

“From noon to late in the evening I usually work on my cars.

“I have never seen anyone make such things and I was not trained by anyone. I investigated and found out for example how a car’s tyres turn.”
