Botswana’s authorities held a press conference on Sunday evening to share updates on the B.1.1.529 coronavirus variant, now known as Omicron, which was first identified in the country.
However, a key question continues to stir debate across Southern Africa: where did the variant actually originate?
The Government of Botswana revealed on Friday that the four initial Omicron cases reported in the country were detected in fully vaccinated foreign diplomats who had entered Botswana earlier in November. The officials’ country of origin has not been disclosed.
“The new virus was detected in four foreign nationals who arrived in Botswana on November 7, 2021, for a diplomatic mission,” the government stated.
“They tested positive for COVID-19 on November 11 as they were preparing to leave, and genomic sequencing confirmed the variant on November 24.”
As of Sunday, 15 additional Omicron cases had been confirmed in Botswana.
Health Minister Edwin Dikoloti praised the rapid response of the nation’s scientists:
“We are proud that our scientists, who are at the forefront of detecting this highly transmissible variant, acted swiftly to identify it. Our country and its researchers deserve recognition for their vigilance.”
The B.1.1.529 variant has drawn global concern because of its more than 30 mutations, which may make it more transmissible and potentially less responsive to existing COVID-19 vaccines. The variant has rapidly spread in South Africa and neighboring countries, triggering renewed international alarm.
Despite Botswana and South Africa’s transparency and scientific expertise in identifying and reporting the variant, global travel restrictions were quickly imposed on several Southern African nations. Many in the region have condemned these measures as unjust and stigmatizing, particularly since the origin of the diplomats — and therefore the possible source of Omicron — has not been disclosed.
Since then, Omicron has been detected in multiple countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany, and Israel, suggesting that the variant was already spreading internationally before its identification in Southern Africa.
For many in Botswana and South Africa, the lack of clarity over the diplomats’ origin — combined with the swift imposition of travel bans — has intensified frustration. Local scientists argue that rather than being punished for transparency, African researchers should be commended for their contribution to global health surveillance.

Great article! But why is the origin of these diplomats still a mystery? 🤔
It’s commendable that Botswana’s scientists acted so swiftly. Kudos to them! 🎉
Why are travel restrictions imposed on Southern African nations again? Seems unfair.
Shouldn’t we focus on transparency rather than punishing these countries?
Wait, how did they get in without anyone knowing where they’re from? 🤨
Thanks for the update! Omicron seems quite concerning with all those mutations.
